Lake Karakul
Karakul Lake lies in the Kizilsu Autonomous prefecture in Xinjiang region of China, on the Karakoram HIghway that runs between China and Pakistan. It is 191km from Kashgar and is at an elevation of over 3600m.
It is one of the beautiful lakes on the Pamir mountains, with the colour of the lake water changing with different light. On rainy and cloudy days it looks like black ink, hence the same Karakul which in the local Kirkez language means "black lake".
It is surrounded by high mountains including - Muztagata mountain (7,546m), sister peak Kongu (7,719m) and Kongur tobe peak (7,595m).
I arrived when the sun was going down, and an autumn snow squall come across the lake.
